Different Cultures Of People Who Have Very Different...

For this assignment I was able to talk to three different people who have very different culture than I do. I spoke with a friend at work who is Tongan and from Hawaii, my best friend who married a man born and raised in Chili and is raising her children in that culture, and I talked to my friend Naoloni Green who was born and raised in Hawaii. She married a Caucasian man and has had four children. She stated that two of her children have the darker skin like her and two of the children are pure white and have blue eyes like their father. Naoloni said that it was first difficult moving her children from Hawaii Tongan culture to Utah. She had a bad experience when she went to register her oldest son in high school. Her son had been taking all honors classes in his school in Hawaii. The school councelor was very admant that Naoloni’s son could not take honors classes at their school. She said that she did not think the kid would be able to handle it. Naoloni explained that the school councelor had color blindness which is professed unawareness of skin color of others (source). Naoloni has gone several times to her childrens schools and contributed in cultural activities where she has shared and taught the students about her Tongan Culture. Her children love when mom comes to school. Naoloni as a teacher understand how valuable it is for children to be able to explain and share their culture with their classmates.
